I thought this was one place the definitions did a pretty good job:
Separately Derived System. A premises wiring system whose power is derived from a source of electric energy or equipment other than a service. Such systems have no direct electrical connection, including a solidly connected grounded circuit conductor, to supply conductors originating in another system.

So, it's a source other than the service....
most often supplied by a generator, transformer, battery, etc.
where none of the conductors connect to conductors of another system.
In the simplest of forms, a doorbell transformer. The secondary windings of the transformer have no connection with the primary.

voltage on a gas line

voltage on a gas line

a potential customer e mailed me the other day about the gas company not turning his gas on because of a voltage on the pipe. he said it was reading 13 volts, that being said, i immediately thought of a low voltage thermostat somehow in contact with the gas line, maybe at the furnace. has anybody ran into this problem? I dont want to charge the guy for a ton of hours looking for this thing, any ideas where to go other than the gas appliances, bonding to gas instead of water, thermostats?
