SE cable

A local inspector says I will have to run SE cable in conduit along the length of a 2x4 stud since there is not enough clearance from the edge of the 2x4 to the cable. But wouldn't the ground wrapped around the wire give it the physical protection required. The SE cable is protected by a circuit breaker.

Re: SE cable

The inspector is refering the the requirement in Article 300.4(D) of the NEC. I don't understand this statement:

But wouldn't the ground wrapped around the wire give it the physical protection required.

Re: SE cable

What is this SE cable feeding?

The grounding or grounded conductor (depending how the cable is used) of SEU cable is an important circuit conductor. It will not provide any protection from nails or screws. The circuit breaker will not prevent nails or screws from damaging the cable either. As Bryan said take a look at 300.4(D)

Re: SE cable

Screw two pieces of angle iron on either side to the inner face of the stud to protect it...in essence forming a full bay length nail plate. Much easier than yanking it all out...
