SE Cable

Can SE Cable be installed underground if installed in conduit. I know USE is rated for underground. I am wondering if I could use just SE cable for the application.

No. SE cable is not identified for use in underground installations and does not meet the requirement specified in 300.5(B).

Per UL TYLZ:

Type SE — Indicates cable for aboveground installation. Both the individual insulated conductors and the outer jacket or finish of Type SE are suitable for use where exposed to sun.

As has often been discussed, conduit is not a "location". The cable and/or conductors are located wherever the conduit is located.

And, coming from field experience, buried aluminium SE, even if in conduit, will fail. The aluminium concentric neutral, even though covered by the jacket, will turn to white mushy toothpaste in a few years. Buried aluminium SER is the same story. I have seen buried copper SE last for 30+ years to parking lot lighting structures, but the code does not permit that.
