Is it permissible to use #8/3 with ground SE AL cable for a range installation in a dwelling unit and use a 40 amp breaker for the OCPD? What is the temperature listing of SE, is it 75?C? All the device terminals involved in this installation are rated at 75?C.

Re: SE for Range installation

Type SER cable contains three insulated conductors and one uninsulated conductor, under an outer jacket. Usually for AL SE cable, the insulation is type XHHW. #8 XHHW at 75 degrees is rated for 40 amps. Your installation with a 75 degree OCPD and a 75 degree receptacle would be code compliant.

Re: SE for Range installation

There have been some comments on the forum about range recepts with a 60oC rating. I looked at one and it was marked 75o, but a Leviton catalog lists one at 60o. This might be a limiting factor on your installation.

Augie is correct, that would the limiting factor. You must use a receptacle rated for 75 degrees if you want to use a 40 amp OCPD.

Greg,

I'm confused. At 60 degrees the conductor is only good for 30 amps.

Re: SE for Range installation

i don't know why i try to get in the Pass and Syemour website i got in but try to read the pdf file i cant get any info about the termation tempture setting but i belive they have dual rating for both 60 and 75 degress if they marked on the device itself

Merci, Marc

P.S. if other get in there that great please do post a link or something so we can see the fact thanks again

Re: SE for Range installation

60c Termination at a 60c/75c breaker termination use table 310.16 is 40amps. Higher rated conductors are only used for derating purposes ie. thhn HH=90c (correction factors) "Am I out in Left field"? Correct Me If I am wrong. Please educate Me.

Why are you using AL. when copper is readily available, why go through all the trouble?

It's a lot cheaper for one thing.

Yea, I was guessing that would be his reason, it would be wise if he had a whole bunch of ranges to do but for one range it would not be worth the trouble IMO

I usually use copper too, but what's the trouble? A little Noalox?
