Has any one heard of or know a code that allows seal-tite (flexable metal conduit with a thin rubber coating) to be used under ground? I thought you always had to use PVC under ground? Does anyone know of any codes for this?

Thanks in advance,
John

What I have read is 348.12 that covers FMC. This is just regular seal tite that is under the ground. You do not have to use PVC under ground at all times?????

Is the question "must all PVC in use be underground?" or is it "must all underground wiring be in PVC?"

Okay, I was working at a job-site and the lights were not working (ground lights). In the pull box I found pvc and it went to the first light fixture, but the wires did not reach the fixture. I dug up the light fixture and found the pvc was broken. I also found that all the jumps from light to light were made with seal tite. I am ask is this seal-tite allowed to be used under ground? What I read in 348-12 about FMC states that it can not be used under ground. Is there a code section that allow regular seal tite to be udes under ground. Then I am asking if the jumps from light to light should have been made with pvc and what the code is for this? Yes the wires run through this.

It is Ok to use underground if so listed:

LFMC-350.10 Uses Permitted.
LFMC shall be permitted to be used in exposed or concealed locations as follows:
(1) Where conditions of installation, operation, or maintenance require flexibility or protection from liquids, vapors, or solids
(2) As permitted by 501.10(B), 502.10, 503.10, and 504.20 and in other hazardous (classified) locations where specifically approved, and by 553.7(B)
(3) For direct burial where listed and marked for the purpose

Flexible Metal Conduit - Art 348
Liquidtight Flexible Metal Conduit - Art 350
Liquidtight Flexible Nonmetallic Conduit - Art 356

Which type of wiring method was actually installed?

You can reference xxx.10 and xxx.12 of these Articles to find your answer.

It was 350 that was used, I do not have a code book here. I know that it was regular seal tite so I do not know if it can go in the ground? If it can go through aggregate? It is not marked that it can be place under ground.

Not marked, than it's NG. The requirement of 350.10(3) is that it be listed and marked for direct burial.

In my opinion, metallic seal tight is garbage. As we all know, water does get inside outdoor raceways, whether through leaks or condensation. As a result, the spiral inside LTMFC rots out after a while.
