A client builds skid mounted refrigeration units, many classified for Class 1 Division 2 group C&D locations. These units have hermetic refrigerant motor-compressors and TEFC fan motors. In the past they installed conduit seals at the compressor connection box, not at the fan connection box. While employed at a chemical company we did not install seals at TEFC motors.

I have scoured NFPA 70 (2014) and spent many hours on line researching this but have not found a definitive answer. Section 501.15(C) (1) Fittings states that Enclosures that contain connections or equipment shall be provided with an integral sealing means, or sealing fittings listed for the location shall be used.

This leads me to think that any enclosure, terminal box or other unit containing lugs, terminals, splices or any other type of wire connections requires a conduit seal.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The article you referred to is about sealing fittings themselves, not sealing requirements. Motor wiring compartments are not required to be sealed unless 2" conduit or larger, however some specs will require it. See section B for CID2 sealing requirements.

Actually, sealing 2 inch or larger conduit entries only applies to Division 1. See Section 501.15(A)(1)(2); otherwise I concur with your analysis.

Thank you, Jim.
