We have large sump pumps with vfd rated rubber cord up to 100hp below ground , floats are used as a method to start and stop some. My questions are these areas considered classified and do we need seals when going from one area to another ?

Just be sure not to run a pipe from the pump control panel down in the pit. Use a cord connector at the panel and a sleeve through the pit's top.

Many of these installs are with the rubber cords going from the motor starters or vfd down to the pits via a conduit or sleeve of some type. Most are wastwater pits or sinks waters , hose waters , sewer water . Does the conduits have to be sealed if going below ground . Thanks for the help

I can't speak for your specific area and it's normally an engineering function to determine if an area is "classified", but almost all, if not all, of the sewage treatment facilities of the size that you mention (based on HP) that I have seen, have been classified areas and the Code requires sealoffs when going from a classified area. Cords could very well be legal and can be routed thru seal-offs. You might want to read 501.15(D)(2) for particulars about exposing the conductors on cords in seal-offs.

If the area is not classified, you might still want to consider some sealant (not explosion proof) to prevent harmful vapors entering your enclosures.

I agree it's an engineering function. The areas that were classified that you have seen Augie, what were they classified? Div 1,2?

its not a classified area I prefer "C" condulet that you can fill with duct seal.

The steam and gasses that comes up through those pipes will destroy a box pretty quick especially in the winter.
