i just did an estimate for some connections to food service equipment in a pantry. we have the box/wire already in the wall and we have to hardwire/whip to the equipment. do we have to use sealtite or can we use regular flex.?

thanks.

if it is in a food preperation area the health department more than likely requires all surfaces to be washable, for this reason i would say sealtite

As far a NEC is concerned FMC would be fine as long as the requirements of Art 348 are met, but I have had some Health Dept (Restaurant) inspectors require the smooth surface of LFMC or LFNMC but I'm not familiar with what Code they are referencing.

In restaurants or food service, I try to limit dust collection areas.

For example, an extension box would be a dust collector. I would use sealtite like mentioned before and a right angle connector and SS plate to limit the dust (germs) from collecting.

It is not a good practice to run conduit (below the ceiling) horizontal, (dust).

Run a ground wire (even if it is under 20 amp) for safety.

If it's in the prep area, sealtight is preferred for obvious "cleanable surface" reasons.

In a pantry (storage) flex/MC may be fine.

Is there a code that covers this specifically? Beats me.
