Just reminding everyone to wear your seatbelts, Even on short trips.

I was on a job today and was going back to the shop the get a D'versabit, and it was raining hard. Was stopped at a light and some lady on drugs slammed into my rear end. I was pushed about 4 feet foward. I was taken away on a backboard in an ambulance. I got bad whiplash and a bruised knee. I would hate to think what would have happened if i didnt have a seatbelt on.

So everyone, DRIVE SAFE!!!

James, I hope you recover quickly. and that was very good advice. :)

Been in a couple of good wrecks in work vans, both times I have no doubt the seat belt kept me from being injured and in one case kept me in my seat so I could keep driving until I got it stopped.

14 years ago, bright spring morning, 3 miles from home and driving about 45 mph with my seat belt on.

.....BAM!

I had been hit head-on by a woman that was doing about 70 mph.
She jumped out from behind a truck, and I never saw her until she hit me.

Knocked my ford pickup backwards about 8 feet.

It took over a hour to get me out of the truck and I had multiple (compound) fractures on both legs, a fractured pallet, broken wrist and several cuts.

4 weeks in intensive care, 7 surgeries, 16 months in a wheel chair and 9 months of physical therapy later and I could hobble around on crutches.

I have no doubt that the seat belt saved my life.
Otherwise they would have dug the steering wheel out of my chest.

I've always worn my seatbelt, and now encourage others to do the same.

A word of advice......Make sure that you have un-insured motorist coverage on your auto policy.
The driver who hit me didn't have any insurance.
If not for un-insured protection, I would have been bankrupt.

"Buckle up"......Your life can be changed in a split second.

James, wishes for a quick recovery from me, too.

And don't think that seat belts are useless during a rear-ender, either. 16 years ago, I was hit from behind while at a stop. I was hit so hard that two vehicles in front of me were also impacted.

The damage to the front of my van were almost as bad as the rear damage, meaning that the sudden decelleration almost equalled the sudden accelleration. I also have always worn seatbelts since day one.

To this day, I still suffer back and neck pain. The driver who hit me was also uninsured and somehow dissappeared from the planet shortly after being found guilty of the traffic ticket.

Buckle up, guys!

James, hope you have a speedy recovery.

I used to work cattle on a ranch and I would throw on my seat belt when ever I was driving around, the foreman asked why since I didn't need to, I told him it's just habit and I don't want to get out of it.

Never needed them my self, thank goodness, but a local boy was killed last weekend, not wearing his, was thrown from the car as it rolled three times. Driver walked away with minor injuries.

I have what's left of a hard hat that saved my noggin once. Working with the bricklayers on a school, and their cubbies were installing scaffolding for a 45' wall. They were putting the last course up while I was getting my pipes & boxes laid out below so when they started the next day I would be ready. One of them dropped a coupling pin from forty feet up and I never knew it was coming.
Next thing I know, my ears are ringing and my head hurts. Had to literally unscrew the suspension from my head. Hard hat was trashed.... cracked into 2 pieces. But I just had a headache for the rest of the day and that was it.

This is a little off topic but it fits with hard hats and seat belts. I had Laser surgery done two years ago amd now make it a habit to put on my safety glasses even if I,m just looking at a job. The surgeon pointed out the fact that after thirty years og corrective lenses I had no FLIPPIN clue how to protect my eyes. Where I'm from Wally has a pair for 4.75 plus tax!;)

If we start doing away with drive by inspections, then I'm going to have to look for another line of work. : )

I know you are kidding but I am going to tell you the truth here.

Last Thursday I was working inside the front of a large super market under construction. I notice a car pulling right up to the outside wall, this is odd as the site is full of tire hazards and the only vehicles driving that close to the building had been all terrain scissor lifts.

So I am thinking to myself who is this whack job?

They had pulled right up to the hole in the wall where the store front glazing would go.

Then I see the front license plate with it's "City" designation, yes it was an inspector. He never left his car, he beeped the horn and the GC went out to meet him building card in hand.

I guess taking a few steps was to much to expect on a hot day.

James,
Best of luck to you in your recovery and thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
I wear my seat belt "most of the time", not all the time. The older I get the more I wear it.
