guys good day! please help me on my concern regarding staircase lightings: IBC art 1006.1 Illumination required. The means of egress, including the exit discharge, shall be illuminated at all times the building space served by the means of egress is OCCUPIED.

Does this means we still have to illuminate the staircase 24/7 since even in weekends (sat and sun) our building still have occupants such as security guards, maintenance and few office staffs working overtime.

thanks in advance...

My experience with Code officials has always been that the egress needs to remain lighted, although I have occasionaly gotten occupancies sensors approved. Exit signs I always keep lit.

I believe that the egress lighting you are asking about need only operate when the power fails, similar to the indoor 'bugeyes.' What is significant about this requirement is that you must extend the lighting outside the building, to light the 'path of egress,' without regard to whether there are stairs or anything else complicating the path.

We may be speaking of different code requirements. I am referring to the emergency lighting; ordinarily there are other fixtures to provide illumination.
