Securing a GEC

IMO, yes, a violation... but debatable.

250.64(B) says a GEC "...shall be securely fastened to the surface on which it is carried." Note the passage does not specify the surface. For 6AWG it is permitted to be run along and securely fastened to the surface of building construction if not subject to physical damage. We can surmise the building construction is the surface referred to in the quoted passage... but that's not explicit enough to say with absolute certainty. This is the area which is debatable.

Interesting, I checked 300.11(B) and didn't think that the GEC applied because I didn't think it was a raceway or cable.

I agree. I had a paragraph written up about that but decided to delete it before posting. Here's my current thoughts on the matter...

Note 300.11(B) only refers to supporting other raceways and cables... not securely fastening them. Even other raceways and cables would have to meet the securing requirement, of their respective Articles, at their terminations. IMO, no raceway or cable can meet that requirement by being secured to another raceway. I surmise the same of a GEC with 250.64(B) specifically stating the GEC must be securely fastened.
