I have always beleived that I did not have to staple romex where fished in finished walls.

334.30 says supported every 4 1/2 feet and fastened within 12" of box.

334.30 (B) (1) says it doesn't have to be stapled every 4 1/2 feet where fished etc., but does it still need to be fastened within 12" of the box?

334.30(B) Unsupported Cables. Nonmetallic-sheathed cable
shall be permitted to be unsupported where the cable:
(1) Is fished between access points through concealed
spaces in finished buildings or structures and supporting
is impracticable.

So the exception eliminates both the need for the support every 4 1/2 feet and also elimates the need to securely fasten the rx in place by an approved means within 12" of the box?

Makes sense. Thanks.

Yep, as long as the box has a cable-securing means.

larry where in the exception does it talk about securing means within the box?

Last sentence of 314.17(C).

exception allows not to have cable secured to a single gang box but requires cable to be secured within 8 inches if not secured to box. Impractical to do with a fished cable but maybe not impossible.
