NEC 320.30 and 330.30 have different sections for securing (section B) and supporting (section C), but doesn't have definitions that describe how these two are seperate issues. Section D describes when Unsupported Cables are permitted. Does section D allow the installer to not have to comply with section B that states that cables has to be secured within 12" of every box or fitting?

Welcome to the Forum and for you first one you sure picked a Good question.
I had to read it several times, but it appears that it does. Perhaps the title of (D) should be "unsupported or secured".
It's tricky and mine is only 1 opinion

Section D is unsupported which basically is stating that you don't need to follow "B" or "C" since the wire is fished. They are giving leeway here to avoid having to damage the sheetrock to secure the cable.

I read securing as stapling and specifically near JB's etc. I read supporting as stapling for the support of the rest of the cable run.

I would have to think that if it's "impracticable" to support it would be as equally "impracticable" to secure.

That being said I agree with Gus:)

BTW, welcome and good question.

Pete

I agree with you on the assumptions about impracticallity, but shouldn't that have been written as an exception similar to how the section on EMT (NEC 358.30) is written? The seperation of securing and supporting sections didn't show up until NEC 2005, so I would assume that something happened to cause this revision to have seperate terms. I guess it's just a matter of semantics since the term "Unless otherwise provided," is used at the beginning of the securing section.

IMO,

Securing: screwed, nailed, ty-wraped, anchored, clamped, #10awg and smaller 12" to box

Supporting : horizontal runs in framing members, holes drilled in wood frame studs, cable

larger than #10 awg

Yep:

Or

Securing: Held in place - usually by some type of device, to include clamps, tie wire, or some type of fastener. Limiting its movement up, down, laterally, in, out or side to side.

Supporting : Winning the battle with gravity by placing something between it and falling on the floor or out of the walls...
