I found this masterpiece of understatement at the front door of a neighborhood home. The tin can has a patina that closely matches the trim paint color of the house. I did not notice it until I was practically staring straight at it ('course that's more a statement about my ability to see :) )

Code issues aside, I was impressed with the make-do assembly that has apparently withstood the test of a fair amount of time.

Looks like the first fixture may have had some heat trapping issues. Looks like they opened the coffee can up to get airflow. :D

I think it was done to provide additional illumination to the sides. I wonder if there is a gasket on top to stop water infiltration?

tshea,

That was my suspicion, also, when I saw the flaps folded out. Looked like it would let light scatter more. . .I wondered if the shade was fashioned with the PAR38 in mind, or just a plain old A lamp.

The overhang protects the location, somewhat.

The exposed NM is not common in my area, and I suspect the fixture is not mounted on a box. . .I didn't have the opportunity to examine the installation, so I have little more info than what the image above contains.

Aelectricalman, I like the backlit knee.

Joe,

I like your word suggestion. Maybe we have a "style", eclectic pioneer, or some such.

I guess we should be more careful when we use the term "can light". Some people apparently take it literally. :D

Once saw 200 ft. of lampcord taped to a fence that went to a jelly jar fixture that was nailed to a tree,BTW there was a male cord cap as a means of turing it off ;) Service was a 60 amp plug fused main indoor mounted on the exterior and had at least 2 load wires under each glass fuse load connection ;)
