Can anyone tell me which code references seismic requirements for new bus duct placed throughout an existing building. I don't see it covered in NEC.We are in New Jersey upgrading an existing switch with new gensets and bus duct running through the building down to new basement House Service Boards. Calls for my electrician to provide Seismic constraints "where required". Looking to be pro-active as to any requirements we may fall under but don't know if any are required. Engineer has been no help.

Engineer has been no help
If the engineer is requiring seismic constraints and has no idea what they are...why are they required?? I suspect a canned spec sheet and somebody didn't read teh fine print. Ask for an exception in writing.

Re: Seismic Constraints

I can tell you what is done here in CA. Currently our building code only requires emergency and legally required systems to be braced. Our plan check engineers feel other loads that exceed 300 pounds need to be braced.

It is always a designed connection by the structural engineer or architect. This is because of all the variable involved in seismic events such as soil types and height of the object, etc.

There are no prescriptive requirements such as we have in the NEC for normal support of reaceways. For example 3 feet from the box and 10 feet apart.

Re: Seismic Constraints

The applicable building code should be a good start. For example, The IBC Section 1621 covers electrical and mechanical component seismic design requirements. It refers you to ASCE 7 Section 9.6, and then modifies parts of it. I have no idea what ASCE 7 specifies, but that is one building code requirement.
