406.10 shall comply with 250.146 simple ? 250.156(B) states contact devices
or yokes designed and listed as self grounding shall be permitted in conjunction with the supporting screws to establish the grounding circuit between the device yoke and flush type boxes.
okay in 250 it talks about clean surfaces, metal to metal contact,in conjunction with.
my contention is if outlet is in contact with flush box , good , but if outlet is not in contact with box i.e. spaced by vinyl wall protecter a jumper should be installed as in 250.146
outlet is self grounding with flush box with no contact except screws in upstate New York
If i'm mistaken a wall of shame will be started with this.

The main rule in 250.46 requires the use of an equipment bonding jumper for all receptacles, but then says that 250.46(A) through (D) act as exceptions to the main rule. (B) applies to self grounding recetacles in a flush box. When using this type of recptacle in a flush box there is no requirement that the yoke of the receptacle be in direct contact with the box. Also there is no rule that permits direct contact of the yoke and box to be the grounding path for a receptacle installed in a flush box. You must use either a bonding jumper or a self grounding device.

Agreed....remember if the receptacle is "Self Grounding" and is installed in "Conjunction" with the supporting screws to establish the grounding of the circuit.

If you are dealing with a standard removable surface cover where the receptacles mount onto the cover itself and can be removed....you would need to install the bonding jumper. ( ie: 4 x 4 surface box and a raised duplex receptacle cover- would require the bonding jumper )

You can however get combination cover and device units that are listed for such as well.

What exactly is a self grounding recepticle?

Is a self grounding receptacle anything but any IG recepticle? In NYC we use a lot of AC cable and I never use a bonding wire on recepticles. I was taught that the bond established between the recepticle and box by the screw is good enough.

Self groundng receptacles are the ones with the gold colored plate where the 6-32 screws are. The part that the ears connect to.

patric,

Under the NEC that is never good enough when a receptacle is installed in a flush box. You need a bonding jumper or a self-grounding receptacle.
