What I'm asking is how the sensor would attach to ceiling w/o using a box? I figured you don;t need a box as it's CL2 wiring.

I can't imagine it wouldn't be like any smoke alarm. Put wiring through hole in plate, attach mounting plate to box or directly to ceiling, wire detector and snap it onto the plate. Bob's your uncle.
