Separate ground and neturals in first panel?

To day I went to a new home ,all new wiring and saw a 200 amp service panel with a main disconnect, that was back to back with the meter pan, and in the service panel the grounds and neturals were separated,this is the first panel after the meter pan, from my understanding I thought that the grounds and neturals separate in a subpanel? Is this ok for the grounds and neturals to be separated in first panel behind the meter pan?

Did you check for the bonding screw? Some times the EGs are installed to separate bars because EC Joe likes the way it looks.

Yes grounding screw is installed

There was no bond wire /bar/strap connecting the ground bar to the neutral bar?

Don't worry about it then. As long as the EG bar is in contact with the enclosure and the bonding scdew is in place.

And life will be much simpler for the electrician who comes along later and installs a service rated ATC for a whole house generator set.
