We are doing some work for the local school district adding some exterior lighting. The site we are working at has two separate buildings fed from two separate services. Most of the fixtures are going to be on building "A", there will only be two fixtures on building "B". The school would like to feed the fixtures on building "B" from a panel located in building "A". Their reason for wanting to do this is so all fixtures can be controlled by the same contactor located in building "A". Is this legal since the building are fed from different services?

In my opinion it could be compliant. If the wiring is concealed and the light is on the exterior then you may be able to get an okay from the AHJ.

You could have the contactor in building A activate a contactor in building B and then use a circuit in building B to run those lights. Possible backup plan if the AHJ doesn't like it.

But ultimately, you still end up with a circuit in Building B from Building A.

Our inspector here wouldn't care if the circuit was under 24 volts. That'd let you fire a contactor with a low voltage source from another building.

Is this a local code in your area or is there a code article you can reference?

In my opinion, it would be compliant per 225.30(D)
While I respect your opinion, compliance is easily debatable, especially having stated control of outside lighting from multiple locations as the only example... ;)

I'd run it by the AHJ beforehand.

definitely !!!!
Might be a good "adder" to my signature.
Anything questionable should be run by the local AHJ.
As you and I both noted, I used the word "opinion". Here, that's all any of us have, I guess, and, as a long time member, you recognize mine are often not worth a hoot :D

I figure with most threads we throw our thoughts up and see which ones float.
