Separating Life Safety and Stand-by power

When was it first required that you have separate sources for life safety and stand-by power? Also what code?

If I remember correctly, and if I understood what I read - sometime in the early 80's, the NEC allowed separate branch circuits for life safety circuits without requiring separate sources.
