NEC 250.30(A)(2) says "Where an equipment bonding jumper.. is run with the derived phase conductors... The NEC handbook has a diagram showing this jumper. My question is - what section of the code requires the equipment bonding jumper? If 250.30(A)(2) says "where" that doesn't imply that it is required? So is it required or not and what section of the NEC says so?

250.30(A)(1) allows the equipment bonding jumper to be installed at the source (up) to the first disconnecting means. If you decide to bond at the source, the bonding jumper would not be run with the phase cnductors to the discnnecting means.

If you look at 250.30(A)(2)it state the following ;
(2) Equipment Bonding Jumper Size. Where an equipment bonding jumper of the wire type is run with the derived phase conductors from the source of a separately derived system to the first disconnecting means, it shall be sized in accordance with 250.102(C), based on the size of the derived phase conductors.
Section 250.30(A)(2) applies only if you install a conductor (wire) as equipment bonding jumping and it will be sized per 250.102(C) regardless were the system bonding jumper is located, at the source or at the first disconnecting means.
