I thought that I read somewhere that anything above a certain KVA needed to be separately derived.

What you probably read was the discussions over UL 2201 and some of the changes in 445.11 for markings and 445.20 for GFCI receptacles on 15 KW or smaller portable generators.

Might have been a specific application where it needed to be, but is not a general rule.
