A friend of mine bought a house with a seperate garage that he is turning into a little rental house. The main house has a 200 amp service with a 125 amp breaker feeding a sub panel in the garage. Should I make him bring a seperate service to this rental? He has had a few EC's come look at the job but everybody has blown him off. Thanks for the input.

Well, I would surely want to have two meters so the renter could pay for his own electricity.

kg18,

Might be a good idea to check with the power company first to be sure that they have no regulations against this install. If that's already been done, seperate meter for renter is best way to go IMO.

Also, check with the locality. Some prohibit second services because dual tenancies are not permitted by zoning.

Could just install a customer owned meter in the feeder. Keep the POCO out of the pic altogether.
