Is it a requirement to hit the steel, water pipe etc? I have a non sds outdoor generator feeding a new free standing indoor switch gear.I also have a new indoor normal feed free standing switchgear that is fed from an outdoor power supply. Are both required to hit the G.E.S.

I don't think so. The generator is not being served, it's serving. This has been discussed recently, and I believe that was the conclusion.

So, IMO, no connection to a GE is required, unless dubiously required by the listing of the generator.

I agree in this case, however if it was configured as an SDS then electrodes would be required.
