My manufacturing plant has a new 480 volt 3phase 60 amp machine coming in and the vendor is requiring a separate ground rod because of there past experiences with other facilities. Our building is only 3 years old and I feel putting in another rod next to the machine is wrong. Any ideas on that?

Re: seperate ground rod for machine

They can certainly add another rod as long as they bond it to the rest of the GE system, otherwise it violates 250.54

ask the manufacturer why he is installing the ground rod. it may be that he is trying to establish a ground reference for the machine controls. one plant i worked in, had a 68 volt neutral to ground reading. the new plant transformer was wired incorrectly and all equipment had to have one side of the secondary transformer grounded (if they weren't already) in order to make the controls work.
