Is a disconnecting means required for a single or multiwire branch circuit to a seperate structure? Im pretty certain 225.31 in the 05 NEC requires it but wasnt sure if there is any exception to this.

In certain locations, the disconnect does not have to be at the remote structure (industrial complexes with documented procedures, light/sign poles). Could probably just use the source circuit breaker. See 225.32.

I think the snap switch is only going to work on residential property, as that is the only exception for the Suitable for use as Service Equipment restriction (225.36).

That may change in 2014. Here is the draft on that

225.36 Type. The disconnecting means specified in 225.31 shall be comprised of a circuit breaker, molded case switch, general use switch, snap switch, or other approved means. Where applied in accordance with 250.32(B) Exception, the disconnecting means shall be suitable for use as service equipment. [ROP 4?55]

That would be a welcome change. I still don't fully understand why they demand SUSE in some cases. If the issue is having a place to terminate the grounded conductor, why just not mandate that the grounded conductor be spliced in the disconnect if there is no lug to land it on...

I don't know why it is necessary either. Seems unnecessary, IMO. BTW, I think Chris (raider1) made this proposal or something similar
