Can SER cable be used as a sub panel feeder in a commercial building ?

Just looking for the NEC section regarding this.

Thanks

Maybe.

Section 338.10(B)(4) tells us that when SE cable is used as a feeder and/or branch circuit, it must comply with Part II of Article 334 - NM cable.

So, the real question is whether or not NM cable can be installed in the particular occupancy in question.

To answer that, you need to know the construction type of the building in question and make sure to comply with 334.10 and 334.12 of the NEC.

338.10(B)(4)(a) sends you to Parts I & II of Article 334 which sets out uses permitted at 334.10 (1)(2)&(3). If you read closely enough, you'll see that SER would not be allowed exposed in dropped or suspended ceilings in your subject commercial building. It would be required to have a 15 minute finish rating as identified in listing of fire-rated assemblies.
Also, as has been pointed out, there may be a local law prohibiting the use of NM cable as well.
Check with the local AHJ.
