A three story residential apartment building with 80 units and underfloor garage is proposed to be wired with SER cable. The Electrical room and meters are in the garage level. The SER cable will go from the garage enclosed in a sheetrock chase up against the underside of the garage ceiling and up via shaft.
1. Do I have to derate the ampacity of the SER cable since the 80 SER cables will be stacked or bundled without spacing in the shaft.
2. Is permitted by Code the use of chases with sheet rock.
3. The Code defines SE Cable, is SER cable the same.

Look at the SER next time you have a chance. If you look closely, you'll probably see it labeled "SE Type R" on the cable itself.

80 SER cables is 240 current carrying conductors. Per table 310.15(B)(2)(a), you have to derate them down to 35%. If you're needing 100 amps for each unit, you'd have to pull 300 MCM SER to get the job done!

I'd do everything possible to avoid the need to derate, I think the labor re-routing might be cheaper than the SER itself. Food for thought... :D
