Under 2008 NEC, can SER cable run from the main panel to a sub-panel in a commercial structure be exposed. Art. 334 indicates nonmetallic sheathed cable must be protected by 15 minute thermal barrier, however SER is not listed in Art.334.

338 is the article for SE cable and has no such limitation on the 15 minute barrier like 334 has.

However your answer likely depends if you are using it as Service cable or for a branch circuit or feeder. 338.10(4) in the 2017 NEC says if using for branch circuits or feeders that it needs to comply with art 334.

I haven't checked but would say if your application is a place of assembly it likely wouldn't be allowed there as well, but if used as service cable and not actually in the assembly area it is likely fine.

Sometimes when it is right in front of your face, you miss it. In the 2008, that language is found in 338.10 (B) (4) (b). Thanks for the education.

Don’t overlook the temperature rating exception, SE is not limited to 60• like NM is
