Having installed a fair amount of SER in PVC conduit I can tell you it actually goes in much easier then 5 separate conductors of the same size.

We use SER all the time for large temp feeders on construction sites and often parts of it will run through areas that require protection and other parts can run as just cable. So instead of making splices we may run 50' open cable that then runs into 150' of PVC and comes back out to just cable.

So yes we are actually using the PVC as a sleeve but the sleeve may be very long and have a few 90s along the way.

The SER jacket is very slick against PVC and the fact the conductors are twisted into a cable makes them go around 90s very easily ........ of course do not try to under size the sleeve.
