Hello,

I am wiring a new commercial building and we are running AL SER cable for sub-panels. Talking to an electrical inspector from a different project, he said this cable is approved for installation above a drop ceiling if the wire is sized #8 or larger. Is this inspector correct in his statement? Where would this be listed in the NEC as i do not see it under Article 338 SE cable.

Thanks

Per the NEC the inspector is incorrect, if Michigan has an amendment to the NEC he may be right. Along with 338 you would need to use the installation methods of 334, see 338.10(4) and notice the mention of 334.

What is SER cable if you don't mind me asking?

Service Entrance Cable. It can be used for inside feeder and branch circuit wiring under the Non-Metallic cable rules.

To add to this, the "R" refers to the cable being round, thus SER = Service Entrance Round

Style SEU cable has two phase conductors surrounded by a concentric neutral while the SER style has two, three or four phase conductors and a bare neutral.

I have maybe seen 10 AWG SE cable but was very old, and some pretty old 8 AWG SE cable, but can't recall ever seeing thermoplastic sheathed SE cable smaller then 6 AWG. Not saying they aren't made but just don't see there would be much demand for it.
