The NEC addresses SE and USE, but not SER. Do we treat it like SE, meaning no underground use? Is it rated for wet locations like SE, meaning it can go underground in conduit?

338 references 340 for USE, meaning treat it like UF. I always thought there was a difference bewteeen underground and direct-burial. Where does SER fall in here?

Danke,

I believe SER is simply the 4 wire and 5 wire style of SE.
It followas all the rules of SE cable. Soutwire lists them together.

May SE-R be run underground in rigid PVC?

That as you must know was a hotly debated question.

IMO yes, many others feel otherwise. I readily admit that the others have a good argument.

the UL white book lists SE cable for aboveground use only and also look at 338.10 (B) (4).

No!;)

Are there any requirements for wire-in-conduit underground besides a wet rating (which SE certainly must have)?

I took this to be the deciding section of the response:

"''Underground" and "Direct Burial" are not necessarily the same. "Underground" can mean installed in, and protected by, conduit. Underground in conduit is a wet location and a wet rated wire is permitted there."

Okay, so what was the conclusion? That SE-R is not rated for "underground", or that SE-R is rated for "wet locations"?

SE-R can or cannot be underground in conduit?

If I read the 2008 pre print correctly 338.12 will settel this argument

338.12 Uses Not Permitted.
(A) Service-Entrance Cable. Service-Entrance Cable
(SE) shall not be used under the following conditions or in
the following locations.
(1) Where subject to physical damage unless protected in
accordance with 230.50(A)
(2) Underground with or without a raceway [ROP 7?93]
(3) For exterior branch circuits and feeder wiring unless
the installation complies with the provisions of Part I of
Article 225 and is supported in accordance with 334.30
or is used as messenger supported wiring as permitted
in Part II of Article 396 [ROP 7?84]
