Recently saw a home with approxiamtely 15 feet of service cable installed behind vinyl siding. I suspect that the installtion may not have been inspected by local municpal inspectors and may be a violation of the code. Would like some input.

It probably depends on where you are located as that pertains to local rules. Generally it is understood that a minimum of unfused cable is to be contained within the building envelope. 230.70(A)(1) states that the service disconnecting means is to be located nearest the point of entrance of the service conductors. The code could not possibly contemplate all possible service configurations, but the intent is clear that the cable should be on the outside of the building envelope until it enters to go the shortest code-compliant route to the service disconnect.
