Does a service change require AFCI protection for bedroom outlets when before there was no protection?
And if so, how certain can you be that the branch circuit so protected just doesn't wander downstairs to the workbench grinder outlet, if it's not your house?
Would the grinder motor affect the normal operation of the AFCI?

In my part of the country you would not have to put in AFCI's if you are just doing a service change. But you would have to put in smoke detectors.

Is that a building code requirement or electrical inspector requirement?

It is an electrical inspector requirement. We have to have smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside of every bedroom, and at least one on every floor. Hardwired with battery backup and interconnected. It is a state amendment to the NEC.

I have ask several inspectors and they all agree it would be difficult to do on an older house. So we do not have to.

We have that also, but do not have to do it on a service change.

That would be almost impossible on a 2 story house. Seems like that would deter change outs.

If it is doable without any sheetrock damage it is required on changeouts. If it can not be done without sheetrock damage then they can be battery operated.

Thats insane considering smokes are not even in the NEC... Do you have an option of passing it off to an alarm company?

I would love to tell a Home owner I dont do smokes and to call an alarm company... :)

They could be done by an alarm company as long as they are in the proper locations and are done before inspection.

Too bad even giving them away serves no purpose...

Giving out free smoke alarms in a multiethnic poor urban population did not reduce injuries related to fire or fires

Giving smoke alarms away may be a waste of resources and of little benefit unless alarm installation and maintenance is assured
