Hello,

I've agreed to a job that is turning into one of those you have second thoughts about. I'm installing new 200 Amp service in a old residential dettached garage. I'm being told by a fellow electrician (Only Commercial) that I can't run jacketed 4424 Alum SER wire through the attic to the panel, that I must run individual wires through conduit. The run from the disconnect to the panel is about 50 ft. I see the code section about protecting the wire close the the scuttle hole, (there is no permanent access to the attic), which leads me to believes this can still be done. There is conduit going to the panel and the disconnect, which I know I will have to remove the jacket through there. I really don't want to run the conduit through the attic if not required. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Bob in Virginia

Bob, are you a licensed electrician? Please don't take offense to the question.
Yes, but I've been out of the game for awhile. Thats why consulted another electrician on the issue. I'm 73. This was a favor job, I normally have just been small jobs over the last several years.

Bob, after the disconnect, SER inside is not a problem. I's a feeder, not service conductors.

However, #4 is nowhere large enough for 200 amps.

I sent you a message with my cell number.

Bob, I will have to ask you to contact Larry, he can assist you.

Roger
