Read 230.70 and then talk to the local AHJ for the local rules. In most areas, there are permissions to go a set distance after the disconnecting means.

In Washington State, the limit is 15 feet. But this limit is established by a state administrative code, not by the NEC.

I'll bet that if you searched, you would not be able to find any regulation anywhere that sets a distance on this. A lot of rumor has det this distance from 5 to 20 feet, but nobody can pass the legal test to actually say 10 feet is the cut-off. If 10 feet is OK, why not 11 feet? How did you come up with 10 feet? If even NFPA couldn't say a specified distance, then who are you to do so?

So, yes you can find distances in some locations. Who are they to do so, they are the makers of the law.
Actually, a lot of areas have set a distance. The local unit of government that has the authority to adopt the Code into law can set whatever they want. Some even require the service disconnecting means to be located outside.

I have been traveling around the country and have noticed that the requirements vary from one jurisdiction to the other. Like Charlie has mentioned the local jurisdiction that adopts the code, can amend it and in a lot of locals, they do in some fashion. The requirement in our area is left up to the AHJ and I can tell you the distance permitted inside of a building here is about 5 to 7 feet, rarely more.
