Service Entrance

I have a service entrance from an exterior utility transformer, underground to the building, then up a chase (interior to building) to an electrical room.

I can't see anywhere in the code that addresses this- however the architect seems to think that there is '...an electrical code requirement for the thickness and construction materials requirement for the vertical chase walls beneath the electrical room that conceal the conduit risers?'

I looked through NEC 230 but don't see any requirements for construction type.

I read that...

I understand what 'outside' of the building in. But I didn't read where you HAD to be outside of the building.

Anyone?

The service disconnecting means must be installed in accordance with 230.70(A)(1).

If you install the disconnecting means inside of the building it must be installed nearest the point of entrance to the building of the service entrance conductors. Where the conductors exit the building slab is the point of entrance so if you want to run up a chase to say the second floor before you install the service disconnecting means you must install the service conductors in accordance with one of the methods specified in 230.6 for the conductors to be considered "Outside of the building".

Hope this helps.

Chris
