Hi there...does anyone know the best way to find out when the current NEC 230-95 requirement for ground fault protection for services was put into the code ? I have a client with a service installed in 1973 that does not have ground fault protection, and we are wondering if it met the code requirements of the day. How can I find this out ?

Re: service ground fault protection

The oldest NEC version in my office area is 1981. The same rule was in effect then, and the paragraph was not marked with a revision bar. That tells me the rule was also in effect in the 1978 version. That?s all I can offer.

The requirement first appeared in 1971 in the NEC. Check dates of your localities adoption of the code. GFI protection may not have been required in your jurisdiction at that time.

Also, depending on the area, if a set of plans had already been approved before the new Code took effect; it could still be wired to the previous Code.
