Service lateral ampacity.

In New York state, our Residential code requires that when one parallels service conductors for say a 300 amp service, they must use two sets of 4/0 al or two sets of 2/0 cu and for a 400 a service paralleled for al it's 2 sets of 300 kcmil and for cu it's 2 sets of 4/0.

I find that absolutely ridiculous. (Nothing personal  )

So does every electrician I point this out to. (Table E3503.1)

Bob I am still not following you, here from to the transformer to the meter are POCO conduits (service lateral) and they will not be changed.

Same here, the service lateral belongs to the POCO.

In this area a service upgrade with a UG service requires a new meter pan that the EC installs.

The POCO field engineer visits the job to determine if their infrastructure is adequate for the upgrade. They drop power to the lateral so the work can be done and restore it after inspector calls them with an approval.

I just completed a 200amp service upgrade to 400 amps. The POCO actually changed the lateral from 4/0 to 350K.

I must admit, this is actually pretty rare in my experience, but they do, in fact, evaluate the situation.

I was referring to upgrades without the proper approvals, as I believe Larry was.
They connect the new service entrance cable(if they change it all) to the existing meter base while it is hot.
