How do you determine which method we use standard versus optional ? I am doing a load letter for a single family home.

Either one is fine but Use the optional calculation.

The optional is almost always lower and as stated either can be used

Nope, there are two methods given so you have a choice. I believe there are some limitations to using the optional method for multifamily dwellings but not for a single family dwelling

According to many on this Forum, you can’t use the optional calculation for downstream sub panels and you have to use the standard calc on those. That’s sort of an opinion in my opinion.
