i know that the code says that the mast can be used as a support for the service entrance cables coming from the pole as long as there are guys to support it,but my question is this, is there a length requirement above the roof line that requires guy wires or straps to support the mast. I am redoing a service from a 100a to a 200a and the current weatherhead is only 8 ft off the ground. yes i said 8 feet. I have to penetrate the roof soffit and was wondering if i need guy wires on the mast.

Not in the NEC but be reasonable about how far above the roof you can go. In Washington State we have to guy any length over 2 ft. Check your local codes and POCO.

you need to contact(usually have a site online)your local utility....they will give u all their dos/donts...

its 3ft max in my area(then it becomes a different story as to what you must do) and i think,,,18inch min above the roof where it comes thur....there are also height requirments and distance requirments for the lines coming to this service mast so best to contact your local utility or their web site. This much i will say...i have never in 30plus years seen one utility person pull out a tape measure to see if it was within spec... just good eye and common sense and judgement. now, street crossings/driveways, different story.
