Is there a chart or reference available that would give the maximum distance for a given wire gauge/type in an underground connection from the service meter pole to the residential service panel 240v/200A?

With or without conduit?

Thanks,

Don

I am not sure what you are asking since this is a design issue. There are no minimum/maximum distances, you are only limited by wire size, load, voltage, etc. to what your system will tolorate for voltage drop. It is time to find out what all those parameters are and do the calcs. :D

Charlie...

Thanks for you quick reply.

I was hoping there we some easy to reference basic guidelines, with regards to 220v/200A underground residential installation.

My situation is this:

I currently have a 700' overhead run from the road to the house. My service meter is on the side of the house. I recently built a shop/barn about 100' from the road.

Instead of running a line from the house to power the shop, I would like to remove the overhead line running to the house and run a 220v/400A single meter service underground from the road to the shop (about 100'). I then want to run a 220v/200A underground line from the meter (shop) to the house panel (600').

This serves 2 purposes: 1. It removes the power poles and overhead line (aesthetics and fire hazard). 2. It puts the service meter close enough to the road that the PUD can read it without having to deal with the driveway gate and the animals enclosed therein.

Thanks again.

If you look on this Mike Holt site for the "Free Stuff" page you can down load a voltage drop calculator.

With the info you gave and some guessing here is what the wire size came out to.

700' total run length 240 volt 200 amp service loaded to 80% or 160 amps run in PVC conduit.

Keeping the voltage drop from 3% to 5% would require 500kcmil conductors.

Drop the load to 80 amps (80% of 100 amp service) would still need 4/0 conductors

Thanks!

The calculator is exactly what I needed. It gave me the wire sizes I need for both the 400A 100' service and the 200A 600' service. Nice tool!

Thanks again!
