if there were a short in the unit that tripped the breaker then the receptacle would not work.

To each their own but the above 'reason' goes right over my head.

As Al pointed out, your going to have to reset the breaker in any case.

And lets be honest, how many corded tools are need to troubleshoot an HVAC unit?

I havent wired any houses for a while, but we always had to run enough lighting to illuminate the entire attic, and we installed porcelin fixtures with a recept built into them.

I havent seen one like that yet, do they have to special order them that way? or maybe it varies by manufacture?

For at least 10 years it's how the majority of RTUs I deal with have arrived.

They are also showing up with factory installed disconnects, I do imagine it is all in the ordering.

We do places like office buildings, supermarkets, shopping plazas and big box stores.

Take a Lowe's where you have 20 to 30 RTUs, the cost to provide a 20 amp 125 volt branch circuit to all of them would with out a doubt cost more then ordering the units with factory installed outlets. This will mean a small transformer is added to supply the receptacle as the feeders are 480 volt.

I have never seen one with a factory installed disconnect either, I wish they all would have them installed, some units are hard to find a good place to attach to

Yes finding a spot can be tough.

Most of the ones we deal with have a place inside the unit to run a flex up to from inside the building to the factory installed disconnecting means .

So that eliminates any roof penetration for us along with the disconnect mounting and the receptacle as well.

Depending on the job the RTU may show up with factory installed supply and return duct smoke detectors that we just have to tie into the buildings fire alarm system.
