Does the code allow a bare grounding conductor to be installed in a conduit with service entrance conductors?

Re: service panel grounding

Why would a grounding conductor be installed in the same raceway as the service conductors? What is its purpose?

Re: service panel grounding

It would be installed in the conduit from the meter base to the main panel.

Re: service panel grounding

It is pvc, the GEC would land in the meter base which has a main breaker. The reason we want to do this is to provide a GEC for the main (sub) panel.

Re: service panel grounding

I echo Don's question of why? Is the purpose to run a GEC from the main panel out to an electrode? It does not seem necesary to me

I think the problem is terminology. If the meter fitting has a main, then the next piece of equipment is not a main panel but it is a downstream panelboard.

If that is the case, the wire you are talking about is not a GEC but a grounding conductor and is required to be run with the circuit conductors. In any downstream panelboards (including the first one off the meter/main), the grounding conductors must be kept separate from the grounding conductors. :D

Re: service panel grounding

Yes indeed Charlie, if that is what we're talking about then the terminology would be the equipment grounding conductor and not a GEC.

And in your last post I think you meant to say the grounding conductors must be kept separate from the grounded conductors. :D :p
