Is there a code stating how high a service panel in a residence is to be installed?
I can find a max. of 6 1/2 feet but nothing else.
Thanks
Doug

Re: Service Panels

Section 404.8(A) of the NEC states that the center grib of a circuit breaker or switch at its highest position is permitted to be at 6'7" above the floor or working platform. :)

Re: Service Panels

service panel?

If you mean an all-in-one with a meter socket your local utility may have a max meter height. Usually 6' max to center of meter.

Re: Service Panels

Thanks for the replys.....I guess what I was trying to ask is ..In a new residential construction the service panel(load center, breaker box)is there a min. and max height to install?

Re: Service Panels

No minimum, except possible local code. Note that mobile homes do have a mimimum of 2 ft. above finished floor. You may also want to take into condsideration issues such as flood planes and spray from irrigation equipment.

Maximum is as I stated in my first post. Again its based on the devices installed and not the cabinet or enclosure itself. :)

Re: Service Panels

If there is no meter mounted to the panel and if it is not at a mobile home there is no minimum height requirement.

The maximum height is just as BPH has stated 6'-7" maximum from the floor to the highest breaker handle. the top of the panel may be as high as you want as long as the top breaker is 6'-7" or less.

Re: Service Panels

Some poco`s have their own min height allowed.

Re: Service Panels

Allan do you mean the POCOs have a height requirement for meters or for panels?

How would the height of the panel be any of their business, unless a meter panel combo?

That would be very different from the POCOs around here, which of course is very possible. :)

Re: Service Panels

Not the panel but here teco has a min.height for meters that they will tie into, lower than 5 ft 4 in. they will not hook up to.It`s in their spec book.Depending on the panels manufacturer it can be tricky to maintain the 6ft 7 in top of breaker rule.I have seen several that have the breakers higher than 6 7 but not tagged by the ahj,but don`t have nm 1 1/8 from framing members selective enforcment I guess.

Re: Service Panels

There is no mounting height requirement for breakers. Article 404.8 only applies if you are using the breaker as a switch.

Re: Service Panels

5.5' seems to be the magic number for POCO's. Alas, whether it's to the top of the meter or the center of the meter, that shall be the debate for another, drier forum. :)

Re: Service Panels

It's amazing how you guys can just site all this code, and tell people where to look for it in different years of the code...does that just come from using the code so much? :p

Re: Service Panels

Midget ,just for fun they keep changing the codes and numbers ;) Maybe this is to keep us confused or limit the number of people that can pass a test on nec.

Re: Service Panels

Well, I probably should have looked in the index...but lots of times, I'm not too sure what to look for in the index, and it takes me a while to find stuff, if I even do find it.

Midget
There is a book called FERM'S Fast FINDER, which might be perfect for you. It is a bit pricey, but helps reduce your time searching for info in the NEC. Also some of the guys use their NEC CD and it's search engine to find these code citations, also a great way to find info fast.
Happy New Year to all!
