I was helping a friend upgrade his service on his home last weekend. He had bought all material and all he needed from me was install support. We upgraded his exsisting meter with a new 200 amp meter/main with feed thru lugs and installed a new 4 wire 4/0AL feeder to the inside panel. It was not till making up inside panel that I noticed that the inside panel was a 150 amp MB panel. The norm would be to upgrade this panel also, but he did not want to at this time and had not planned to. If I were bidding this job, I would have planned to do so, because its just "what I have always done".
The question I have is....Since this is a 150amp MB panel, why would it not be ok to leave as is? Inspector does not like it, but electrically I see no safety issue. IT is a 200 amp service feeding a 150 amp MB panel. The 150 amp breaker is protecting panel as is did in the past. The 200 amp breaker is protecting the feeder, if something were to happen. I know that this is not the norm, but to me it is more protected than before.
Anyone ever done this before? This is a first for me, so I am just asking.
Thanks in advance!
