A contractor in the midwest has been listing upgrades to 200 Amp service, soup to nuts (weatherhead to circuit breakers in the panel and supplemental ground if required), for $1000. They also contract for journeyman electricians. The last auction (Item 130018154625) closed without a bidder.
 
Unless he lives somewhere with a very low cost of living, I can't see doing even an easy 200A upgrade for that price. And what about variables? No way would I offer a price on an upgrade without first looking over the conditions. I've done some that were fairly straightforward, while others featured nothing but expensive, time-consuming hassles.
 
i believe it's a loss leader, either trying to break into the resi market (the company is a large commercial company), an attempt to get publicity, or just an attempt to give back to the community.

There are a bunch of stipulations to the bid. But it doesn't appear as if they have had any takers so far. check their completed auctions.
 
I have seen this ad before. If he is doing this much work for $1000.00 even next door to his shop he is losing money. Unless he is doing it himself then he is only clearing about $150.00. The cost of the wire alone is going to be at least $250.00. Also he has PVC conduit for the riser. Here the POCO will not allow anything but steel conduit before the meter base. The riser is not high enough to have 10ft for the drip loop, which is what the POCO requires here. The what about the PVC conduit? Is it considered being prone to damage? The job really does look ok. What if we have about 38 breakers in the QO panel? There is about $280.00 worth of branch breakers. I don't really want to crunch the numbers here but I can almost bet that the cost would be close to $850.00 before mark-up on what I see.

But I got to admit angies list is paying off.
I registered for free, wrote up a great report on my company, in my friends name. I did not lie about the job I did.
I got one more job & 3 calls in less than a month.
