Me and my brother are having an argument. Does nonmetalic surface raceway or any other raceway have to be installed complete with all appropriate fittings and support if it is only used for low voltage cables?

Also can you install a non combination type AFCI breaker in an area that does not require AFCI protection?

Many different articles cover "low-voltage" cables, what kind are you thinking of? Some yes, some no. Article 725 contains both. See 725.46 and 725.130(B).

I would think so.

Maloo,

I concur with Volta.
And, basically,
if conduit is required, then the appropriate fittings are required.

Look at NEC 300.18(A). It states:

Raceways, other than busways or exposed raceways having hinged or removable covers, shall be installed complete between outlet, junctions, or splicing points prior to the installation of conductors.

Surface non-metallic raceways most often have removeable covers so 300.18(A) would not apply.

That depends of if the low voltage cables are required to be installed in a raceway or if the raceway is just being used for protection or as a chase.

Absolutely, branch circuit/ feeder AFCI breakers can be installed in any circuit that is not required to be protected by a combination type AFCI breaker.

Thanks for everyones time.

We are working on my old high school and the camera installer used non-metallic wiremold on a ceiling to chase the cabling. It just really looks bad when there are no end caps and no transitions from hard ceiling to a drop ceiling. They just ran the cables out the end of the wiremold . There are also 1 to 2 inch gaps in the cover. I really hate to see my old high school get screwed by a lazy contractor.

As for the AFCI its hard to get rid of the old type QOB120 AFCI.

wiremold would not need to be complete before pulling wires. In fact i rather dought you could do it. What you have seems to be for prtection only. Nothing you can or should do if its in and paid for. Sloppy sometimes comes with low ball prices.

Back when i was in highschool there were no cams. But then there were no guns, drugs, knives either.
