An excavator contractor wants me to run a new sewer pump pit circuit, 240 v, 17 amps. He's not sure exactly what he needs other than that. Should I run #10 3 with ground (4 wires) or 2 wires? Does it have to be GFI protected? I'm just running the circuit to a disconnect box on a post, then he's running it underground from that. Thank you.

I would run 4 wire.

Is it being installed in a classified location?
it's a friend's house, the county is having everyone there install a pump close to their septic tank. His tank is downhill from the new main line. Thank you. I was leaning on 4 wire. GFI? The pump comes with an outside alarm.

Does the alarm need to be on a separate circuit? Mine did. Plus pump is 240 V, alarm is 120 V.

Run conduit.

Run conduit.

. Doubly so for a long pull. Trenching is no fun and not cheap. Trenching the same trench a second time for failed/burnt up/rodent eaten wiring is less than no fun.

eta: I'd run 4 wire so you could put a 120V receptacle at the pole. or have a spare conductor should one burn up (especially if you're using UF).

The ones I do are usually Orenco brand pump controllers over here. They take 4 wires usually and have individual breakers all jumpered together on the line side for the alarm and pump circuits. I don't usually bother with seperate circuits for the pump and alarm. I've never used a GFCI on a sewage lift pump.

I usually run conduit to a flower pot hand hole. Three number twelve for pump and two number Fourteen's for alarm float.

Some systems have more conductors for floats back to a control panel. They are all a bit different.
