Doing a multifamily project and the GC is using 7/8" hat channel for wall furring on exterior and party walls.

When you add in the 1/2" sheetrock, that allows only 1 3/8" for electrical box (4x4 preferred) and a mud ring. Since it is all concrete block construction, it is looking like we are going to be doing alot of grinding and chipping.

Does anyone have a good alternative for me?

Re: Shallow box needed!

Tell the GC to use deeper hat channel. It comes in sizes larger than 7/8". Or have him chop the holes in the block.

This is 1 1/2" Channel. It allows you to use standard 1900(4X4) or 4 11/16" boxes.

Here's a link for it:

Re: Shallow box needed!

Thanks for the reply but have been down the larger hat channel route and they dont want to go that way.

Looks like somebody's busting holes, or this just became a Wiremold job.

Re: Shallow box needed!

Why is it that when I start punching these holes in the block I always run into three or four holes that have the cells poured solid with what seems like 10,000 psi concrete???

Re: Shallow box needed!

this is standard construction---firring strip and 1/2 drywall. locate the outlets in areas that are easy to chop!! good luck!

So they would rather have you do unnecessary work and chop up a perfectly good concrete block wall when a perfectly good solution is available. Ya gotta love GC's. This is precisely why I like dealing with the homeowner or business owner one on one.

Re: Shallow box needed!

as gc how are they going to hang the drywall? they can fur it out as far as u need it to be oher wise they are not going to tap con drywall the only other finish is paint on concrete or drivit.(yuk) good luck.

Re: Shallow box needed!

Hi Naplespete57, The GC is in for a surprise when it comes time for insulation close-in and fire code buyoff. Unless the zone code requirements do not need insulation or the GC has used technifoam insulation on the outside wall coverage, he is in direct violation of most energy codes in most areas of the USA. Further, a thermal isolation barrier may be required between the metal furring and the concrete wall. If there are interior party walls involved, a two hour fire barrier would be another factor if there are safety issues required. (double X1 sheetrock or equal or double stud wall distances are fire code general rules.)
Metal walls tend to melt and cave in quickly in fire conditions as compared to slow burn stick framed studs...which is a lot cheaper way to go from a construction economical method. Run this by the GC and see what he says.
